Remember back in January when we mentioned aging a beer in tequila barrels? Astute readers knew what that meant.

Tequillin Me Salty, our tequila barrel aged Gose with cara cara oranges and key lime, returns for Jester Fest on March 31st.

This year, we’ll also have a limited draft only edition of Tequillin Me Salty with key lime sans cara cara oranges.

Brewed in collaboration with Kim Armstrong, the fourth winner in The Twelve series, this German-style Dortmunder arrives just in time to quench your whatever season it decided to be today thirst.

German-style Dortmunder was developed in western Germany in the 1800s to quench the thirst of local coal miners after a long day’s work. Dortmunders land somewhere between a Helles and a Pilsner on the German-style lager spectrum. Its malty sweetness and slightly more hoppy than a Helles backbone makes you crave another before you’ve finished your first.

Trust the brewers on this one, because they’re drinking all of it. So you might want to come grab a pint before they finish the job.

#wegobeyond Behind the #bcorp - Environment

Probably the most well known component of B Corps is the focus on the environment.

Not a surprise to anyone, but brewing is not the most environmentally friendly industry. We use a lot of water, land, and energy, to go from the farmer’s field to the pint in your hand.

But, we have a responsibility to mitigate that impact. How do we do it? Here are a couple of ways.

Conserving Water and Energy During Brewing:
When we were researching equipment to purchase, we chose a system that included a hot liquor tank, cold liquor tank, and heat exchanger. Why? These three pieces of equipment work in tandem to reduce our water consumption and energy usage. Water first stored in the CLT is run through the heat exchanger to efficiently cool wort (saving energy costs) and then returned to the HLT for future brewing or cleaning (saving on water usage). It may seem like a small thing but the impact is huge.

Reducing our Carbon Footprint One Fermenter at a Time:
Since we were just talking about equipment, that second picture features a spunding valve. Another important purchase in our efforts to reduce our environmental impact. We close this valve to allow the natural CO2 produced by yeast to carbonate the beer, lowering our carbon footprint and reusing something naturally created during fermentation.

Recycling and Composting:
Reducing what ends up in the landfill is second nature around here. We partner with a number of local companies for recycling and composting of our waste. @evergreensouthcarolina recycles all of our cardboard, paper, plastic and aluminum. @bricolagedynamics takes all of our glass and creates high-quality, sustainable sand for reuse in a variety of settings. @atlasorganics collects our used grain bags for use in their home composting program.

From Grain to Glass and Back to the Farm:
Another item we do NOT send to the landfill – spent grain. The beautiful cows at @official_hj_ranch are the happy recipients of our spent grains. Anytime we have too much grain for them, Atlas Organics collects the rest and composts it.

Is this all we do? Nope, but it’s more fun to talk about than low-flow water faucets.
