Earlier this spring, hop-stars from 50 different countries representing more than 8,000 breweries converged on Philadelphia for the prestigious World Beer Cup. Craft breweries showcased their best recipes and competed across nearly 120 categories, and beer outfits from the Blue Ridge region showed up in force, with more than a dozen brewers taking top podium spots. If you’re a fan of Belgian brews, the Palmetto State is home to two of the world’s best. Greer’s Southern Growl Beer Company earned top honors in the Belgian-Style Quadrupel grouping for its Quad Bless Your Heart. The beastly 9.8% ABV beverage is seriously good, with rich, malty notes of cherry cordial, sweet raisins, burnt caramel, and a warm boozy finish. A dozen miles away in Greenville, Liability Brewing Company took gold in the Belgian-Style Blond Ale category with its sustainably brewed, Feral Garden Gnome.
